iPhone/iPad/iPod Stuck on “Plug into iTunes” Screen after/While iOS 8 Upgrade

iPhone Stuck on the Screen that was Told to Plug into iTunes (iTunes Logo is Red in the Latest iTunes 12)

red logo on iTunes 12

I plugged my iPhone in to iTunes on my computer the other day to update the newest iOS 8. and it worked fine until an unknown error popped up mid update so I pressed cancel and unplugged my iPhone but on my iPhone it just told me to plug my phone into iTunes but every time I plug it in, my phone nor computer read it as plugged in. My phone is now stuck on the screen that tells me to plug it into iTunes. I can turn it on and off and reset it but it is still stuck on the screen. I have checked the plug with other phones and it is fully functional. iTunes is also updated  to the newest software on the computer. Who can help me out of this dread screen? Much thanks!

How to Exit the “Connect to iTunes” Screen on iOS Devices?

Literally, the strange and dread screen on which shows “USB -> iTunes” is called Recovery Mode screen, it mostly happened when iOS update, jailbreak or somewhat related. It is not that horrific when you are stuck. Here I will recommend you the best and easiest tool called ReiBoot to get the plug-in iTunes logo off from your iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod all included).

It is the best and easiest because:
1.  No need to connect your iPhone/iPad/iPod to iTunes as Apple told you (So it is never mind if iTunes can’t detect your device)
2.  Malware&virus-free
3.  No need to restore your device to fix the stuck screen (So you don’t need to worry about data loss)
4.  No need to hold any button like Power or Home
5.  Only one click to Enter or Exit Recovery Mode
6.  Totally free and safe

How to Use ReiBoot to Fix iPhone Stuck Problem?

how to fix an iPhone that is stuck on recovery mode while iOS 8 upgrade
Tenorshare ReiBoot

Now that we have got the free program ReiBoot, now let’s learn how to use it. Frankly speaking, it is very easy, anyone can operate it freely.

Step 1. Download and install it on your computer: Both Windows and Mac are supported for free but have different download package. For Mac users, here is the ReiBoot Mac Download.
Step 2. Connect your iDevice with the computer on which ReiBoot is installed: It is compatible with all iOS devices (iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus included) and iOS (iOS 8 & 7.1.2 included).
Step 3. Run ReiBoot then it will detect your device: If it failed to recognize your device, try to disconnect and connect again, or change an USB cable.
Step 4. Enter or Exit Recovery Mode: If you need to enter recovery mode, that is, your iPhone is in normal state, then you can only “Enter Recovery Mode button”; If you need to put your device out of recovery mode, you can click “Exit Recovery Mode” button.

So easy, isn’t it?

In addition, all stuck problems like white Apple logo screen, black screen (DFU mode), reboot loop, frozen iPhone/iPad/iPod can be fixed with this program. Please share it with your friends if it worked for you!

    1. Sorry, my dear. Could you tell me your iPhone model, iOS version, and iTunes version? And is this your exact question: Use ReiBoot when stuck on recovery mode then iPhone screen shows apple logo then shut down?
Btw, you can try as follows:
Download the newest iOS 8.0.2 for your own iPhone model (here is the download link for each iDevice model http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-8.0.2-download-links-for-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-direct-links/ ), then open iTunes and connect your iPhone with it, press shift and click "restore iPhone" when choose the download package. Be sure to backup your iPhone before update.
      Good luck.

    1. Try the method below to update your iPhone:
Download the iOS 8.0.2 from this page for your own model (Don't directly download it from iTunes): http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-8.0.2-download-links-for-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-direct-links/
Open iTunes when download is done, connect your iPhone with iTunes
Press Shift and click Restore iPhone (choose the package you just downloaded to restore from)
Then wait the restore to complete. Good luck!

    1. Apple switched the color of iTunes from blue to red in the latest iOS 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite, so it is no problem of the red iTunes logo.

As to your problem that iPhone keeps coming back to the red iTunes screen, my advice is to close the iTunes when using ReiBoot. Someone on CNET said that iTunes attempts to pull you back to the recovery mode screen when you exited with ReiBoot so problem can be fixed after iTunes is closes.
Have a try. Good luck! Have any problems, please feel free to tell me.

    1. Hi, Ann. It is possibly because that your iPhone can't enter a proper state and ReiBoot also can't find a proper platform to work on so iTunes needs you to restore so that to access an original system. Do you download the latest version of ReiBoot, the version 3.0.0.0? If not, you can try the newest version again. Hope you can make it, please feel free to tell anything.

it doesn't work when the red connect to itunes logo is as a result from update to ios 8.0.2....it might have worked for ios 8.0.1 or ios 8 but it 100% fail on ios 8.0.2
i think you need to update the reiboot software so it can exit the recovery mode successfully for ios 8.0.2 when the red connect to itunes comes up
also if anyone has other programs apart from reiboot which will successfully take you off the recovery mode when the icon shows, please say here.
my last backup was years ago and i dont want to do a restore with itunes because i will lose too much data.....author any news on when u can get a reiboot that works with ios 8.0.2 and i closed itunes even from task manager and services, but this version of reiboot doesnt work with ios 8.0.2

    1. It works when iPhone is in normal state. I tested on my iPhone iOS 8.0.2, it enters and exits recovery mode with ease just like before. In your case, it is possibly because your system is broken so ReiBoot can't find proper system to work on. ReiBoot is designed based on normal system. So my advice is to download iOS 8.0.2 via package for corresponding model downloaded from other site (like here: http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-8.0.2-download-links-for-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-direct-links/) and don't update directly through iTunes or the OTA.

    "Fake reviews"
    October 1, 2014 | By JKPwnage

    Version: ReiBoot 2.3.0
    Pros
Would probably be able to put it IN recovery mode.
    Cons
I plugged in my Recovery-mode iPod 5th gen into the computer after the 8.0.2 update failed epicly. Pressed "exit recovery mode", and the screen turned off. Turned back on, went to the apple logo, and then back to the "connect to iTunes" screen. I tried again, this time quitting iTunes and disconnecting as soon as the screen turned off. Same problem. I tried going into task manager and closing all iTunes-related tasks, and it still didn't work. So I came back here. I looked at the 5-star reviews, and the "people" that reviewed them had also given five stars to ANOTHER Tenorshare "product". Therefore, I am convinced that those reviews are fake, and Tenorshare is full of crap.......

i dont think it is crap though, i just think reiboot needs to be updated to work with ios 8.0.2

After OTA update 8.0.2 reboot, my iPhone 5 get stuck in recovery mode.

Reiboot can not fix normal mode, nor tinyumbrella.

All iOS data recovery software asks me to enter passcode, or that iPhone is not in normal mode.

I need to recover images and videos from last 5 days.

    Any suggestion?

    Thanks

as you can see, all the problems relating with your reiboot software is that it doesnt work with ios 8.0.2

    1. Well, thanks for your feedback. It is true that some users failed to use ReiBoot at iOS 8 update but it is also real that some users succeeded to exit recovery mode with ReiBoot so I would not admit the so-called fake reviews. It works depending on your iPhone status and normal system. When updating to a new system, there is a chance for system broken of your device, if there is no system to be operated on, I am sorry that ReiBoot can't help. However, we will strive to update ReiBoot to help more people. Thanks for understanding and support.

same here, doesn't work for ios 8.0.2 on ipad
i don't think your re-iboot works for ios 8.0.2, maybe previous versions and iit cant be a broken system because even reiboot sees it as a normal system that is why it never gives the option of ' enter recovery mode', but only gives the option of "exit recovery mode" and that only restarts the system and comes back with the red connect to itunes logo
like previous people said, it seems you need to update the re-iboot to work with ios 8.0.2 and also proof it works by showing a video on recovery mode and showing reiboot worked 100% with it on ios 8.0.2....the previous video u showed on youtube didn't show proof it works, just graphics which can be made up

    1. Thanks for your idea. We are striving to let ReiBoot help more people. As to your confusion why it only shows "Exit Recovery Mode" option: If your iPad has already been in recovery mode, then there will be no option to enter recovery mode but only exit recovery mode. Vice versa.

Honestly, we tested it on normal device running on iOS 8.0.2 and it works well on entering and exiting recovery mode, but we didn't test the situation when iDevice stuck on iOS 8.0.2 upgrade. So we will try our best and fix this ASAP.

Thanks for all your opinions. Aimee is always here for help to my best.

My solution was to use iTunes 12!!!

My iPad mini was stuck in recovery mode with the 8.0.2 update, and after connecting to my computer with iTunes 11.4 the only option was to reset to factory state, that was really disappointing.

But today, surprisingly, after updating to iTunes 12, iTunes gave me the choice between "Update" and "Restore", and of course I chose "Update".

The update took an unusual long time (30 min after the download), but at the end my iPad is updated to 8.0.2 and all data is still intact.

Just wanted to share with you that there is a solution from Apple that worked for me.

  17. ReiBoot helped to exit the recovery mode, but my phone is not working yet!

Few weeks ago, I tried updating my iPhone 5 from iOS 7.* to iOS 8 through my home wifi connection. It almost completed but at the end the phone went into restore mode, displaying a red iTunes logo.

Connected the phone to windows pc and tried to restore it from iTunes. It downloaded and updated restored and etc. but at the end it throwed an error as given below.

"The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1)."

Contacted Apple and updated iTunes to latest version and tried different things couple of times to restore the phone, but the result is the same error. Apple says its some kind of hardware issue, which is revealed at the time of OS update. I did not have any kind of issues with my phone until i tried updating to iOS 8. I regret that i tried that. My phone is out of warranty now.

After reading this this thread, I tried ReiBoot and it helped to exit the recovery mode and the iTunes logo. But now it just shows Apple logo and iTunes could not recognize the phone when connected. ReConnected the phone to PC by holding the home button and and iTunes recognized the phone in restore mode again. downloaded the iOS8.0.2 from redmondpie url given and tried to restore. It gives the same error.

Please help me if you can think of any solution to my problem. Thanks !

  18. Hi,

Easy question - Is my data (photos etc.) lost?

    Now comes the not-so-easy explanation...

    Iphone 4S, 16GB.

Tried (last night) to update to 8.0.2 via Itunes on the PC,as didnt have enough memory on Iphone. Made sure Itunes was latest version beforehand. ohhh whatamistakatomaka...

It was nearly finished (got to about 90% through the white bar update screen), and I was thinking hurray I am a technical genius!... but then alas it all fell apart.

Basically it got to the verifying software update and then came back with an "An unknown error occured (6).".

It was then stuck in recovery mode so I tried using Reiboot. That took it out of recovery but then in a state where the screen was blank.

After trauling the internet I got it back into recovery mode (I think) by holding down power and home on the Iphone for 20 seconds....basically back to the red itunes logo.

I tried again using the redmondpie 8.0.2 but it got to the same place (error 6)...

After another internet google-fest search I discovered a suggested solution saying you should attemp it in DFU mode rather than recovery mode ifyou get error 6. This requires you holding down power and home for 10 seconds and then continuing to hold down home for a while longer....

I then tried this but it would only give me the option to restore and not update, which I assume means loss of data.... which I didnt do...as up til then I only tried updating (so as to not lose data)...

After all this I am pretty sure I've lost my data anyway, with all the fiddling I did with power and home button, so I might as well just go with a full restore...

Soooo back to my question... do you think I've lost my data. If yes, I suppose a system restore is the only option...?

    Thanks a bunch!

Andy (not such a technical genius after all...) W.

    1. Hello Andy, as you said, if you full restore iPhone, you will lose all data and settings on your iPhone. And the situation where you can only restore but not update is said to occur on iTunes 11 and not iTunes 12. You can update to the latest iTunes 12.0.1 and try again. If you don't want to lose data, better not do the full restore.

If no other way to fix but full restore, remember this: after full restore, don't use the iPhone and recover the lost data from iPhone (if no backup) right away. To recover data from iPhone without backup, you need an iPhone data recovery tool.
Free trial this if needed: http://www.tenorshare.com/products/iphone-data-recovery-win.html
Use the free trial version before pay for it since the free trial version let you preview the lost data, all the data that can be previewed can be recovered.

Now back to your question, if your iPhone still stuck on dead screen, the big chance is that it is not full restore and you can still fix it.

So update iTunes to iTunes 12.0.1 firstly, then update.

      Best luck!
      Aimee

    1. Apple said that iTunes error 16 is related to hardware issues, it gives broad solution but not that practical. You can try as below:

      1. Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125 )

      2. Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.

      3. Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.

This may not help but you can try anyway. If not, just wait the iOS 8.1 which will be released less than 8 hours.

Also, i found that most users who encountered iTunes errors when doing iOS update are using Windows PC so i suspect it is the problem of Windows iTunes. If many times failure, you can try it on a Mac.

      Best regards,
      Aimee

I am using iTunes 12.0.1.26 and tried to update to iOS 8.0.2 and had the same problem as above. I switched my lightning cable to the original apple-brand cable that came with it and moved to a USB 2.0 port on my computer. I reset my phone and iTunes was able to see it and said there was an error with the update. It allowed me to either update the phone again or restore it. I chose to update it and about ten minutes later I got another error that said iTunes could not recognize my phone. I disconnected my phone and manually reset my iPhone 5s holding the sleep/home button for ten seconds and now everything works fine. My off-brand cable works as well. Also, it updated to iOS 8.1 and not 8.0.2. I hope this helps anyone else.

    1. If you don't have iTunes, you can upgrade your device via OTA update. On your device, Settings >General >Software Update. This needs about 2.2 GB free space for the new iOS 8.1 update through the real package size is about 100MB.

On the contrary, if you don't have such enough space to update via OTA, you can download iTunes and upgrade in iTunes.

As to your worry about losing pics, music and apps, you are highly suggested to backup your iPhone before update. When update is done, if data is missing, just restore your iPhone from the backup synced before update. Then all the data would be restored to your iPhone.

    1. Hi, Mada, you mean iPhone stuck into "turn on and off" loop after recovery mode exited? That is possibly because the battery indicator didn't update properly. sometimes it’s software related, and sometimes it’s actually related to the battery hardware itself.

      However, try the following:
      1. Drain the iPhone to 0%, Charge to 100%
      2. Backup and restore as New. REMEMBER to backup before restore. Connect your phone to iTunes to backup.

If this can't fix it, you may need to take it to Apple.
      Good luck.

The solution is not reiboot. The solution is to download the latest itunes or if you have an older version of iTunes, then update it to the latest one. The new iTunes has 2 option, "update" or "restore", the old version has just "restore".....with "update" all your files will be intact and safe, with "restore" all your files will be wiped and detleted. Choose the update, wait for about 30 mins or more and see your apple product fixed.

    1. When you are using iPhone data recovery, can you preview all the lost pics before recovery? In order to recover as many pics from your iPhone, you need to avoid data overwritten. Once data overwritten, the lost data gone forever.

If you can preview the lost data you need to recover, just register to the full version then press "Recover".

However, before using paid iPhone data recovery software, you can try to use ReiBoot to exit the recovery mode. BTW, many success experiences are shared on the above comment, you can check them up if have any problems on using ReiBoot.
